Watermelon Slim

Even though the temperature is beginning to drop The Boat House is still pumping every Sunday with the Blues and people who enjoy a good time. Most Sundays it’s free to get in, but on the 28th we have an amazing deal with only $10 cover charge to see ‘Watermelon Slim’ one of the USA’s top blues musicians……

Weare looking forward to hosting Watermelon Slim’s only Auckland show…but if you’ve never heard of him he’s the real deal…..two of Slim’s records were ranked #1 in MOJO Magazine’s annual Top Blues CD rankings. Industry awards include The Independent Music Award for Blues Album of the Year, The Blues Critic Award and Canada’s Maple Blues Award for International Artist of the Year among others. Slim has hit #1 on the Living Blues Charts, top five on the Roots Music Report and debuted in the top ten in Billboard. One of Slim’s most impressive industry accolades may be the liner notes of The Wheel Man eagerly written by the late legendary Jerry Wexler who called him a “one-of-a-kind pickin’ n singing Okie dynamo.” Slim has been embraced for his music, performances, backstory and persona. The Landing Restaurant
We have the ideal summer venue for dining on the decks to take full advantage of the stunning weather , and we will give priority seating to people who have bookings in The Landing before those who turn up on the day. Space is limited and at busy times there may be a delay with food when there is a large crowd…but this is the place to come to and chill out….simple enjoy the day and relax under the shade of the giant oak trees.

The Portage Bar – Live music every Saturday Night
We have live music every Saturday Night from 8-11.30pm and it’s free to get in. There are pool tables and a very popular outside area with a good selection of bar food available. This is a good relaxed bar to spend time in with your friends or your family.

The Boat House – Live Blues every Sunday afternoon
Live Blues bands play in the Boat House every Sunday from 2-6pm. The Boat House grill is open with a wide range of street food available, including a childrens menu. You don’t need a booking in this area, it’s free and there is usually plenty of places to sit, either in the Boat House itself, the marquee where the music is, on the decks, under the gazebos or on the lawn on a bean bag. Check out the calander for the gig list.

Quiz Night – Wednesday Nights
Quiz Night in the Portage Bar will be starting again on Wednesday the 13th February and will be every Wednesday night throughout the year. This has been so popular that teams are now booking tables. If you have a team you would like to book in phone us on 09 412 8902 and we’ll reserve you a table.

Our New Years Party
Our New Years Party was such a success we’ll be looking at doing it again next year…and we may do something along these lines throughout the year because it was so much fun! We’ll keep you posted……

The World Cruiserweight fight between Shane Cameron and Danny Green will be fast and furious with Cameron touting that Green will need to bring a baseball bat to beat him.

All jokes aside Cameron’s focus now is to  make sure he was in the right frame of mind to counter the vast skills of Green, a 39-year-old Australian with the experience of being a world champion in three different weight divisions.

It should be an interesting match.

Our focus has been to provide a music venue which compliments the overall experience of this unique rural tavern. We want to provide a community and family friendly environment which is reliably on every Sunday with a relaxed atmosphere. We call it ‘Blues in the Boat House’ and no bookings are taken (it’s first in first served) there’s a full bar and various food options. Given the area it easy for people to find places to chat and catch-up or get more involved with the music and dance. We have adopted the ‘Blues genre’ which actually covers a wide range of styles. We always post the upcoming acts on our calendar here on our website and on our facebook page.

The Lamb entry is for our ‘Espresso Lamb Fillet’. This is tender espresso rubbed lamb on beetroot, feta & mint waldolf salad with blue cheese yoghurt dressing & toasted sourdough bread.

This dish has been on our menu for the past 12 months and has been a favourite in all seasons.
The saltiness of the feta, the sweet tartness of the beetroot, the crispness of the apple, the nuttiness of the walnut with the mint & yoghurt compliments the lamb superbly. Strangely the espresso rub is a subtle compliment. All these textures & tastes make for an exciting lamb dish that works well in both our Bar & Restaurant.

We’ll be looking forward to the confernece and finding out if, like last year we are one of the winners.
